Today, we’re launching Lightcone Research.

AI is changing what’s tractable in scientific research, putting more ambitious questions within reach. We build open-source tools and standards that turn this expanded reach into results other scientists can reproduce, inspect, and build on.

We are an international initiative based out of the Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS) at UC Berkeley and the AI for Science and Science for AI (AISSAI) Center at CNRS. We are backed by philanthropic funding and advised by world-renowned physicists, statisticians, and pioneers of open-source software.

To concretize our perspective, we have written Science that Compounds: The Need for a New Substrate for Research in the Age of AI, in which we outline a cautiously optimistic outlook on the future of AI-assisted science and the infrastructure needed to bring about this positive change.
